Real Dry dives inReal Dry Waterproofing not only goes ‘skyward’ and fixes leaking domes (see: Dome Restoration), we also can go in the other direction: Fixing water problems ‘down below’ in gymnastics pits.
In May 2024, Real Dry was called upon to solve yet another water infiltration issue at a local business. This time it was the Gymnastics Center at the South Shore YMCA in Hanover. This facility provides gymnastics instruction and training for beginner to advanced gymnasts.
Waterlogged
At the time, the foam pit landing area used by the gymnasts was being infiltrated by water. Both the numerous foam safety blocks and the trampoline tarp located in the pit itself would become stained with mildew and as a result would off-gas unpleasant odors. This was not an acceptable situation, especially for the children of all skill levels who would regularly use and be trained in the facility.Real Dry assessed the problem and offered a solution that was readily embraced by the South Shore YMCA. A perimeter pressure relief French drain system was installed, including a length of drainage pipe totaling over 140 feet! Additionally, to ensure that the entire pit remained dry and comfortable, curtain drain was installed along the entire length of the perimeter walls. We also added a vapor barrier behind, helping to ameliorate any other sources of humidity that could infiltrate the area and cause further issues with moisture.

Finally, because of the overall length of the perimeter system itself and due to the type of regular use seen at the facility (children in classes as well as ongoing individual training), Real Dry recommended a two-pump system for the sump setup that would discharge any water from the building, should any appear – providing both greater capacity as well as operational redundancy.

To the right you can see the finished work on the gymnastics pit. The French drain system has been installed – including the curtain drain (gray) and the vapor barrier (white). Once the cement cures, the pit will be ready for use. But from now on, it’ll be a very dry pit ... one that the children and gymnasts can use with peace of mind, knowing they’ll be safe and secure from the water and mildew that previously permeated the space.
Today the landing and safety pit at the South Shore YMCA Gymnastics Center is dry as a bone. The children and students are back tumbling, rolling, and bouncing all over the place – as it should be.
